Tornados, Snow, Wind, Rain….

12 04 2008

You name it and the weather has done it here in Iowa the last few days. Spring is definitely NOT shaping up to be like spring. :P  Needless to say, I have not done a lot of flying yet… plus, the airport is still closed - so that really does hurt things a little. Hopefully I’ll be doing a flight review next week if the stars align.

Today, though, I am going up to talk with a young man about learning to fly. He is doing an internship at the Independence Airport (such as it is) and just wants some information and to ask some questions. More than happy to do that!

In other news, I’ve been writing a weekly newsletter (ok - it’s been a little sparse lately) on flying issues and topics about learning to fly. I intend to make it more regular. :P I’ll post information here later today about how to subscribe to that.

Clear skies! [kc]

Went flying today!

22 03 2008

Yeah - finally went flying again! Took some friends for a ride and just generally had a good time. Not much to write about here… but check out the slideshow below!

Wow…

It’s really been a long time since I wrote on this! I should write more often. :D

I’ve just been working hard and trying to pay off some debt so I can start my new project - the RV-7! Stay tuned for a new site I’m developing that will highlight my project and provide a builder’s log as I complete the project step-by-step!

Merry Christmas!

24 12 2007

Hello everyone. Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I have been extremely busy - and that’s an OK thing. I like being busy. :P

At any rate - Merry Christmas! I hope everyone enjoys some time off and some fun times. I’m looking forward to many new experiences in 2008 - and hopefully posting here much, MUCH more! :D

Ho ho ho!

Interpreting the FARs

9 12 2007

We’ve all had basic questions about flying… including some that require us to look into the mess that is the Federal Aviation Regulations. But what happens when you are looking for a straight answer to your question, and all you can find in the regulations actually makes you even more confused? Don’t worry - you’re not alone, and you’re not the first.

Recently, a student of mine and myself have fallen into this trap. We’re determining what constitutes a “cross-country” for the purpose of meeting certificate/rating requirements (in this case, the instrument rating). Needless to say, this has opened up a lot of discussion and possibilities.

I won’t really go into what we decided on the cross-country ordeal, except to say we’re going to stay on the “safe side” by over doing it instead of playing the gamble. What I will say is: pay attention. Sometimes the FARs aren’t as strict as they seem, and sometimes they are. It really can be a problem out there with different FSDOs interpreting FARs differently and so on. For us folks out there just trying to get by, it’s difficult!

Best answer: play on the “safe side”. Or, have your argument ready for presentation. :D
